Shimla has a number of roads that restricted and sealed to vehicular traffic. It is therefore easier to hire a local taxi rather than battle traffic and no-go zones.
ON FOOT
Central Shimla (including the Mall and the Ridge) and its extension all the way to the Vice Regal Lodge is largely pedestrianized and approximately a 3 kms long or brisk 45 minute walk. Guests can also chose to cut out the uphill climb by taking a cab from Sunnymead to the two-stage elevator or Lift, connecting The Mall with Cart Road (ticket prices are currently Rs.20/- per person) and then easily walking back following Raaja Bhasin’s book on the ten walks of Shimla.
GUIDED TOURS & TRAVEL AGENTS
The best guided walks are conducted by the noted local historian Raaja Bhasin, author of “Shimla: The Summer Capital of British India”. E-mail or call Raaja in advance to make sure he’s available (tel. +91-98163028014; raajabhasin@yahoo.com).
